I took a single point off the rating because of the driver issue. I'm beginning to bog it up with all the stuff I have on my XP SP2, when I'm able to test with just as much software, I'll be able to render a more truthful result.

For now, the OS is crisp and running quicker than my XP SP2 ran when I first installed, but only time will tell.

I still don't have drivers for my peripherals however (Cam, Remote, TV Card, AIO Printer), but that stuff isn't essential in an evaluation. Microsoft has just released Windows XP 圆4 Edition SP2, currently available for all architectures (x86, 圆4, & Itanium) in English and German. All my necessary hardware components were detected ok, and most that required drivers, I was able to locate at the makers websites. Personally I've not had any major problems with it. Don't REPLACE your OS with it - it's for testing only so my recommendation would be to either put it on another hard drive or another partition and put on some multi-boot software, or to run MS Virtual PC and play with it there. Don't be scared.just know that this IS a Demo and not a program 'waiting' to be activated. Um.yes, DEMOs are time limited, so what? It's fully functional and fits it's purpose as a BETA TEST.ģ.

Given its shared codebase with Windows Server 2003 SP1, and not other Windows XP Clients, and the proximity of the Windows Vista release, it wouldn't be that surprising to me if a retail version of the 'with sp2' bits wasn't released so the team could focus.Īgain, I would suspect that some of the differences in availability with WinXP 圆4 compared to what we might expect from a Windows Client release are due to the priorities of the day on the Windows team. It's harder to understand this from our perspective in 2011, where 圆4 architecture is widely adopted for home users, but back in the Windows XP days, there wasn't wide spread use of 圆4. Its actually a relatively unique windows release. Its quite possible that the Windows team chose at the time not to make the with SP2 version of WinXP Professional X64 Retail that you're looking for, as I'm not sure why SunnyBoy Mike, its been quite a few years since WinXP 圆4 bits were released.
